Three reasons to shop with small businesses
Do you ever think about the fact that when we spend our money, we’re making a significant decision? In a world of one-click and instant purchases, it’s easy to forget but choosing where you shop can be a powerful act. Especially in tough economic times when shopping slows down, small businesses often feel the squeeze - so here are three reasons why you should shop small this festive season.
Give back to your community
Imagine a local area without small businesses? Over recent years, high streets have become known for being empty and once thriving areas have become desolate and dull. In your local area, if you’re lucky enough to have small shops, cafes or restaurants then it’s likely they are a central part of your community. Whether you go every day or once in a while, there’s nothing quite like the atmosphere in a venue at the heart of a community and as I know from my local coffee shop, customers are everything. So although you might be saving your pennies, spending a few pounds to help your community can be hugely positive.
Buy from a real person
Convenience is at the heart of lots of modern life, but there’s a clear trade off in the sense of satisfaction and the personal service you typically receive. Convenience shopping is all about speed, yet there’s nothing quite like the personal touch you get from a small business owner when you shop with them, both online and in person. The care and love often packaged in a parcel from a small business makes the experience of shopping special and less transactional. Plus, the buzz you can give a small business owner when you order with them is a great gift to be able to give in itself.
Shop more sustainably
A huge upside of shopping small is that small business owners are often involved heavily in the manufacturing process for their products and although not guaranteed, it’s common to find that they care much more about the quality and origin of their materials. Especially with an increased focus on the environmental impact of our shopping habits in the mainstream today, looking for simple ways to reduce your impact and shop more sustainably can add up over time.
