Supermarket swaps to help you save

Weekly shops are an unavoidable part of modern life, and you can easily spend a little or a lot. One way to save money when it comes to your weekly supermarket shop is making simple, subtle item swaps. I’ve broken down a couple of my top swaps that have helped save a lot over the months - and a few swaps I won’t be making.

Swap fresh for frozen fruit

As I’ve learned more about health over the years, I’m conscious of trying to ensure I get a good amount of fruit and veg in my diet every single day. That being said, fresh fruit can be really expensive and especially out of season, buying more exotic fruits or my favourite - raspberries - can cost a lot. On top of the cost, fresh fruit can go off quickly and end up in the food waste, which I always want to avoid. Switching to frozen fruit changed the game; not only is it more cost effective, it’s far better for reducing waste and making the most of your food. In lots of recipes and in smoothies, you’ll never know the difference!

Swap to supermarket brand cereal

Health is on the menu for breakfast, but I’m all about balance and I can’t resist a late night snack bowl of cereal. The downside is that the cost of certain branded cereal can be eye-watering, so I’ve tried and tested own brand versions of popular cereals (which all have similar but not quite the same names) and realised that most of them taste exactly the same, at a fraction of the cost. Trust me, give it a try and see if you can spot the difference.

Swap to own brand dishwasher tablets

Keeping on top of your household cleaning is one aspect of adulting that I’ll never learn to love, but it’s a must and it can end up expensive if you neglect to look after your home. One thing I’ve learned is that whether or not your plates come out clean has little to do with the tablets or powder, and a lot to do with your stacking method and maintenance of your machine. For example, rinsing your plates before putting them in your dishwasher stops the filter clogging up, and checking your salt levels will keep it working far better than fancy tablets. So save yourself some money and shop own brand.
