5 Gifts to Give Without Breaking the Bank

Christmas is well and truly around the corner and for all of us, 2020 has thrown a whole host of mental, financial and physical challenges our way. This year, you might not be in a position to splash the cash this Christmas and the good news is there’s no need to. Here are five gifts you can give to friends and family without spending a lot.

It’s Bake Off Season

If you’re anything like me, there’s nothing you love more than the smell and taste of delicious cakes or cookies freshly made with love. Whether it’s simple cookies wrapped in tissue paper or extravagant homemade chocolates, handcrafted gifts aren’t only a thoughtful gift for the recipient but they give you a great opportunity to have fun being creative. In a year that’s been frankly dominated by screens in the absence of face to face connection, switching off and settling into the kitchen can be therapeutic for you too.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Do you ever miss the good old days of taking a camera on a night out and snapping away, before spending the next day sifting through the album to upload to Facebook? Whilst I definitely don’t miss the fear of what might be captured behind the lens, our digital world has made hard copy photos a thing of the past. This year, find your favourite pictures and have them printed and framed as a keepsake gift.

Time to Get Personal

There’s something ever so special about a brand new shiny notebook, despite the fact that we spend most of our time typing. Perhaps that’s why stationary is such a treat these days. One of my favourite presents in recent years came from my best friends and it was so simple and yet the perfect present. A beautifully packaged, personalised notebook with my initials on the front. It’s not often that stationary makes it to the top of an essentials list, so it can make a perfect present.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

It’s not a magical money pot at the end of the yellow brick road, but one of the best gifts that can keep on giving for months and years? A practical book. In my household, it’s cookery books that fit the bill as not only do they look glorious, but they contain hundreds of delicious recipes that you can revisit time and time again. If you’re not a foodie, coffee table books with short stories, stunning photography or advice for life can make great gifts.

Green Fingered Gifts

Millennial cliche aside, there’s something brilliant about giving a living plant as a gift. It’s not a gift that you give and then it’s gone but a mini project that the owner takes on. Plants have seen a revival for good reason: in a world where everything is online and ownership of many things is becoming more distant, the opportunity to focus in on a simple living organism and watch it grow and develop is quite special.
