Why now is the time to improve your money mindset
When I first started learning about money, I figured it was all about the practical steps and only after I started to think about my own relationship with money did I realise that money mindset is a critical piece of the money puzzle. Still, whenever I talk about money mindset I feel a little bit ‘woo’ but there’s no hiding from the truth: working on your money mindset is non-negotiable if you’re dreaming of less money stress in your life.
Whether you know it or not, your money mindset hugely impacts how you feel on a daily basis. Your beliefs about money affect how you think and behave towards spending, saving, earning and sharing your money. So why do we often ignore this piece of the puzzle?
Like all good things, recognising your current beliefs about money and understanding why you hold them can be a challenging process and if it was easy, we’d all have overhauled our money mindset and be living harmonious financial lives by now.
The reality is that humans are wired to avoid discomfort - and I’m talking about the psychological kind (although it totally applies to physical discomfort too). We seek to avoid discomfort even when we know that we’d end up better off if we did the task we’re avoiding.
The problem is that if you don’t fight the discomfort, you can easily end up stuck where you are and that often isn’t where you ultimately want to be. With money mindset especially, getting out of your comfort zone and digging deep to understand why you believe what you do about wealth, spending, earning and generosity is the first step to reframing the role money plays in your life.
So, discomfort is inevitable but you have two choices. You can choose to stay in your pyjamas, put your feet up and decide that you’ll deal with your money demons next week or month. Or, you can take charge and get clear on your financial goal to motivate yourself to do the work.
Ultimately, by choosing not to work on your money mindset, you’re leaving money on the table. A negative money mindset impacts all areas of your life from your confidence and self-worth to your relationships, and by shifting your perspective of money you can see huge positive shifts in many parts of your life. It really is possible for you, so what are you waiting for?
